Another article on the food service industry in Asheville by the local alt-weekly, The Mountain Xpress, gave me another opportunity to create an illustration to go with the article. The focus this time, was on the rampant substance abuse problem inherent in the industry.
As part of the usual process, I was given an idea of what the story entailed and I had to come up with some illustration ideas to present for the article. I roughed out a few sketches to convey some ideas I had about how to portray the subject of the story in one image. The paper chose the interior close up of a commercial kitchen counter showing prescription drugs, a syringe and glass of alcohol in the foreground with a customer ticket and salad off to the sides. The background of the kitchen was out of focus enough to put the focus on the foreground, yet still in focus enough to show where it was located.
Images above show the sketched out roughs of the illustration ultimately chosen, as well as the other ideas that were not.
